About

My name is Terry and I love travelling to places off the beaten path. Half the fun is getting there: the other half is exploring the less travelled destinations. This blog is not to suggest what you should see or do, but an account of what I saw and did, with the means to inspire people to take up the rucksack (or wheelly case) and embark for a week or a month, or even longer into places that are itching to be explore .

Essential Travellingterry Tips

Whether a trip is for 1 one week or 2 months there are some essential travel resources  that always need to be considered during the planning process:

MAPPING: maps.me is a very good offline travel map app. Ideal for following mountainous pathways that other online maps do not recognise. It also calculates distances and easy to plot the things to see making planning a day a lot easier.

ACCOMMODATION:  AgodaHostelworld & Booking.com are my ‘go-to’ for hostels, guesthouses and hotels, catering for all budgets including free cancellations and great communication links between guests and management.

TRAVEL INSURANCE: Heymondo and Admiral covers medical emergencies, theft, cancellations and lost luggage. All Clear is also good cover for travellers with disabilities and illness.

TRANSPORTATION: Good starting places are Busbud and Omio, but regions around the world have their own apps and websites, such as Gjirafa  (Balkans) and 12Go (Asia), which is mentioned in the individual posts.

FLIGHTS: Skyscanner, Trip.com & Booking.com are the best websites to start searching for great deals which also include a handy filter if passengers are taking  cabin and/or check-in luggage.

INTERNET: Airalo is the best esim providing reliable internet access. NordVPN is ideal to gain access to services and sites that may be blocked in certain countries. Both apps would need to be installed prior to the trip.

TOURS & TRIPS: GetYourGuide, TripAdvisor and GuruWalk are great platforms to search for day trips, tours and free city walks. Hostels can also offer affordable excursions and are worth enquiring as many accept non-guests.

CAR RENTAL: DiscoverCars.com is a reliable platform to find a variety of rental vehicles. I have always had very good service with SIXT rentals, but there are many others to choose from.

LIQUIDS: With the ongoing reduction in personal, cabin and checked baggage allowances, so much money can be saved by buying common toiletries such as shampoo, toothpaste, anti-perspirant, washing powder etc on arrival at destination.

LUGGAGE: It’s quite easy to take the traditional rucksack when travelling, but depending on the type of terrain and trip such as exclusively cities and towns, its worth considering using a durable wheely travel case – can make life a lot easier.
